With 30 years of experience, Paul’s expertise is best described as a hybrid of contact lens designer and software engineer, with a PhD in optics thrown into the mix. He is active in industry, university and clinical research and holds an Adjunct Senior Lecturer position with the University of New South Wales.

Paul graduated from City University, London, England in 1995; completed his Masters with distinction in 2005 and was awarded his PhD in hyperopic orthokeratology and contact lens optics in 2009 from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. Paul’s experience includes every facet of the optometry profession, from clinical practice to academia, research and industry. He holds 37 peer reviewed and professional publications, and has presented 34 conference lectures in Australia and internationally. Paul holds three professional fellowships; and has been conferred two prestigious research awards from the British Contact Lens Association, along with seven other research awards during the course of his PhD, and two post-doctorate research grants. He holds an adjunct academic position at UNSW and consults to contact lens industry on projects relating to product and systems design and software solutions including machine learning.

Dr Kate Gifford
Dr Kate GiffordPhD, BAppSc(Optom) Hons, GCOT, FBCLA, FIACLE, FCCLSA, FAAO, GAICD
Kate has been in continuous clinical practice for 15 years, owning Gerry & Johnson Optometrists for the past decade. She has comprehensive experience as a peer educator and professional leader, being elected the youngest ever President of Optometry Australia from 2014-16. Kate is a Visiting Fellow at the Queensland University of Technology.

Kate has been in continuous clinical practice since graduating from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia in 2003 with First Class Honours and a University Medal. An owner-operator of independent practice Gerry & Johnson Optometrists since 2007, Kate is an internationally recognised clinical leader and peer educator, having provided over 90 conference lectures in Australia and overseas. In 2017 Kate was awarded the British Contact Lens Association President’s Award for Excellence and was named the QUT Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year. She completed her PhD at QUT in 2018, examining binocular vision and contact lens optics in orthokeratology; receiving four research scholarships for this work. Kate has achieved four professional fellowships and holds over 40 peer reviewed and professional publications.
